The Archie Project Assembly

 

We have had a fantastic first week back after the half-term break, and the children have settled brilliantly into their learning. Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to:

English – Poetic Creations
This week, we have been exploring poetry, focusing on rhyme and rhythm. The children have planned and started writing their own poems, showcasing their creativity and developing their writing skills in exciting ways.

Maths – Building Skills and Understanding

  • Year 4 have started learning about area and perimeter, tackling different challenges to deepen their understanding of these important concepts.

  • Year 3 have been continuing their work on multiplication, building confidence and fluency in their number skills.

History – Discovering the Romans
We began our new topic on the Romans by looking at their impressive buildings and monuments. The children were fascinated by Roman architecture and are eager to learn more about this incredible civilization.

RE – Cornish Folktales
In RE, we have started to explore Cornish folktales, uncovering the rich traditions and storytelling heritage of our local area.

PE – Throwing and Catching
This week in PE, we focused on improving our throwing and catching skills. The children enjoyed various activities designed to develop their coordination and teamwork.

The Archie Project – Understanding Dementia
We had an engaging assembly about dementia as part of the Archie Project. The children learned about different types of dementia and how to interact with people who have it. These valuable skills will be put to use when we visit the residents of St Anne’s care home.

It has been a great start to the half-term, and we are looking forward to all the exciting learning ahead. Thank you for your continued support.

Welcome back for Spring 2

We hope you've all had a lovely half term break. It's wonderful to see the pupils so engaged with their learning on their return to school - and with the sun shining too!

CURRICULUM

Our topics for this half term can be found in the overview that I have attached below. In addition to this you will find this half term’s Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs) to practice with your child. I have also included the Year 5 and Year 6 recommended reads and statutory spelling lists.

This week we've launched our Learning Adventure with orienteering in the school grounds to provide the pupils with an engaging learning opportunity to enable them to build on this knowledge during the term.

PE 

PE continues to be on a Tuesday afternoon and pupils can wear their PE kits to school on these days.

SUPPORTING LEARNING AT HOME

In Upper Key Stage 2, it is important to support the children’s learning at home as much as possible. A reminder that our home learning expectations are:
Daily Reading (15 minutes) – recorded reading record to contribute to a Reading Karate reward
Times-tables and KIRF practice (20 minutes weekly) using TTRS and the KIRF sheets below
Spellings (20 minutes weekly)

YEAR SIX
In preparation for the SATs in May – we have given Year 6 children access to ‘Yearsix.co.uk’ which has a range of videos, practice tasks and assessments for each area of the Maths and Grammar curriculum. If you have lost your child’s login then please do get in touch and we can send it to you. Year 6 pupils and their parents or careers will have received additional information regarding supporting learning at home in the lead-up to assessments in May.

Charity Bake & Bracelet Sale
Thank you to the group of Year 4 pupils and School Council for running this week’s bake sale, lucky dip and bracelet stall. In addition, thank you to everyone who kindly donated cakes. It was a terrific success raising £488.03 for our school charity - Newquay Zoo Wild Planet Trust. Well done everyone!

FOWPA Disco – Thursday 3rd April
Get your dancing shoes on; it's nearly time for our FOWPA Disco! As well as having a fun time, the event will also raise money for FOWPA (Friends of Wadebridge Primary Academy). All money raised goes towards supporting various school projects, resources and experiences. See the email sent home today for further details.

Coffee Morning and Phonics Workshop - Monday 3rd March 08:45-09:15

Have you got 30mins to spare? With World Book Day the same week, Mrs Hill will be holding a phonics workshop and coffee morning; everybody is invited! Come along and find out more about our approach to teaching early reading at WPA and enjoy a cup of tea/coffee at the same time.

Year 4 Residential Information Meeting - Tuesday 4th March 15:30 (Hall)
Mr Langton will be holding a meeting after school for parents in the Hall (and Year 4 children) for those who are going on the Year 4 residential to Porthpean in the summer term. Please can you supervise your child/ren during the meeting, thank you.

St Piran’s Day - Wednesday 5th March

To celebrate St Piran’s Day, your child is welcome to come to school in Cornish colours: black, white and gold (otherwise normal school uniform). Children will learn the story of St Piran and take part in a whole school ‘Trelawny Shout’ by singing one of our favourite songs, The Song of Western Men. Caterlink also have their special Cornish menu, including pasties!

World Book Day - Thursday 6th March
We would like to invite children to dress up as a book character to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 6th March. Please don’t feel you need to go to any unnecessary expense; homemade costumes or keeping it simple is fine. Equally, dressing up isn’t for everyone so if your child prefers to attend in their own clothes that day, that is fine. Throughout the day, the children will take part in a range of book related activities including some paired reading with buddies in the opposite key stage over a hot chocolate and a biscuit. For this, we ask that each child brings in their favourite book to share. Our Reading Ambassadors will be visiting each classroom to interview children about their favourite books. Our classes have already started (and you may have spotted during this week’s PTCs) the whole school competition to ‘Decorate their Classroom Door’. Judging will take place on WBD – photos to follow!

Bridge Kids Staffing Update
We’re pleased to share that Charlotte Cloke, who recently joined the team as a Lunchtime Supervisor, successfully interviewed for the Breakfast Club Assistant position. Charlotte started this morning joining Bev Young as part of the Bridge Kids team. Later in March, Terina Buckingham will be stepping down from her Bridge Kids role after many years of dedicated service. It’s not goodbye though, as Terina will be continuing her Lunchtime Supervisor role. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Terina for all her contributions to Bridge Kids. Bev Young will be re-joining the After School Club team (in addition to her current roles in Breakfast Club and KS2 Teaching Assistant).

Welcome back to Spring 2! We hope you all had a wonderful and refreshing half term break. It's great to see everyone back, ready to dive into another exciting and engaging term of learning and discovery. Attached below, you will find an overview of the coverage for this term, which outlines all the fantastic activities and lessons we have planned.

This week, we kicked off our learning with the story of Zahra, a young girl who lives in an African village. The children have done a fantastic job sequencing the events of the story, and they came up with some thoughtful and imaginative questions they’d like to ask Zahra if they could meet her. It's been a wonderful start to our exploration of different cultures and communities around the world.

In Maths, we’ve continued our focus on subtraction, building on the skills we’ve already learned. The children are becoming more confident with subtracting numbers and solving word problems.

In ICT, the children have been working on creating their own flip books, learning the basic principles of animation. They have enjoyed experimenting with this fun and creative way of bringing pictures to life, and we are excited to see how they progress in understanding the magic of animation.

In PSHE, we filled in our treasure chest of success, reflecting on our individual achievements. It was wonderful to see how much the children have accomplished in different areas, from swimming to gymnastics and many other activities. It was a proud moment for everyone as we celebrated all their hard work and personal growth.

In RE, we delved into the story of Mount Hira, exploring its significance. The children then expressed their understanding and thoughts by drawing beautiful pictures using oil pastels. It was a great opportunity to combine learning with creativity.

Finally, the children thoroughly enjoyed their PE lesson this week. They participated with enthusiasm, developing their physical skills in a fun and engaging way.

Overall, it’s been a fantastic start to the term, and we’re looking forward to all the exciting things we’ll be learning and experiencing together in the coming weeks.

 


Harrowbarrow Primary Academy   Friday 28th February

A largely sunny and dry week following the half term break has been just the tonic for the children and staff as we returned to work this week. Due to other commitments, I haven't been able to do the morning meet and greet as often as I would like, but whenever I have seen the children around the school they have been so enthusiastic, cheerful and polite; it has been a real pleasure to spend time with them.

This week, Class 1 started their gymnastics programme at Copper Valley Junior School. The excitement was barely containable when Abi Flashman opened up all the climbing frames and got the gym equipment out. I will try and post some photographs in the future to share this opportunity which just isn't possible at Harrowbarrow.

Our Year 5 and 6 football team competed in the first matches of their tournament on Tuesday. Despite losing 2-1 and 2-0 against Sir Robert Geffery and Bishop Cornish schools respectively, the children were great. Like the Year 3 and 4 team before them, many of the children were playing their first ever match. Well done to Poppy, Belle, Caleb, Leo, Noah, Archie, Talan, Rioch, Eli, Jayden and Josh.

In September, we made some changes to our English curriculum. There has been a renewed focus on using high quality texts as the starting point for children's writing and improving their spelling and handwriting. At this halfway point of the year, we are already seeing significant improvements. This has been recognised by some of our professional partners who visit the school regularly to see lessons, talk to the children and look at their books. Here are a few examples of the impressive work we are seeing across the school:

Class 2 children have published their work in this brilliant book, with extracts shown from Penny and Jasper's stories. A copy of this book has been put in the library for other children to read.



Class 4 have been writing some mystery thrillers and I was particularly impressed by this piece from Leo.


Like a phoenix from the flames, our polytunnel is being resurrected after Storm Unis flattened it a couple of years ago. Thanks to the Tesco Community Grant Abi Flashman secured, damaged parts have been replaced and caretaker Mark Cocking has been rebuilding it. We expect a new plastic cover to go on in the next couple of weeks, ready for children to start growing plants as part of their science curriculum. At the same time, we have a new forest school shed we will be erecting to provide some storage and protection from adverse weather during forest school sessions.

Advance Notice Reminder
Please note, all Bridge MAT schools finish at 1.30pm on the last pupil day of each full term. This is to give school staff time to organise and prepare for the term ahead. Harrowbarrow hasn't previously adopted this policy, although many schools now do it. To align Harrowbarrow with our partner schools within the Trust, we will be adopting this practice at the end of this term, on the last pupil day before the Easter holiday (Friday 4th April). We will send a reminder nearer the time.

Learning in Spring 1

We learnt about the history of our local area with a focus on Mining. We set out to answer the questions "why is mining important to Cornish people and what impact has mining had on Cornwall?" The pupils demonstrated their curiosity while learning about out local area and as a celebration of all the work, we all took a trip to Minions! We met Iain Rowe - an expert guide for mining around the area and he took us all around the Phoenix United mine. He was so knowledgeable about the sites, jobs and local history and he even enabled us to see the house of the mine owner and explain the process of bidding for pitches in the mines.

After touring the mine site - we stopped for a pasty on Minions village green before heading down the old mining railway track and heading home. We just had enough time for a photo opportunity at Trethevy Quoit before heading back to school. We walked a long way - but it was a great day out! Big thank you to Will from Ginsters who helped us make out pasties, and Iain from Cornwall Heritage Trust for all their help in making this trip possible!

We were lucky enough to participle in a Book Trust Represent's virtual author visit with Benjamin Dean, author of The Boy Who Fell From The Sky. Benjamin discussed his motivations for being a writer and his creative process which led to really interesting conversations within the class. His book recommendations also spurred on our reading! 


In English we took part in an international poetry competition called "Flyku" where we composed our own Haiku's designed our own paper planes - which we also had a go a flying!  

In art we have developed our portrait skills using a range of materials. 


The fantastic class even managed to squeeze some time in the snow between their learning.

Who made these footprints? 

We have had a lovely first week back in Foundation / Year 1.

We have begun our learning on our new big question which is: ‘Who made these footprints?’ We have set up a palaeontology lab for our role play and we have been working as fossil hunters! We have been brushing fossils and using magnifying glasses to take a closer look.
In our big question this term Year 1 will look at the idea of ‘footprints’ as who has had an impact and made significant change in society. In History, we will focus on the first plane and the Wright Brothers as well as looking at Neil Armstrong and the moon landings.

In Maths, Foundation have been combining two groups to make number. They have used lego bricks to help them. Year 1 have started their new unit: Addition and Subtraction to 20. We have begun our learning by using base ten and numicon to add together numbers within 20.

In English, our new learning journey is focused on Jack and the Beanstalk. We have started our learning journey by learning the story through actions. We have also begun to sequence the story and write key words or sentences linked to the pictures!

w/e 26.2.25 - End of Half term!


Wow—what a fantastic end to this half term! The children have worked incredibly hard and had so much fun with their learning.

In English, we’ve been preparing for our poetry writing by exploring noun phrases and prepositions to create vivid descriptions. The children also practiced performing poetry aloud, building their confidence and expression—there are certainly some budding poets in the class!

Maths has been full of excitement as we continued our times tables challenges and tackled multiplication and division with larger numbers. The children have shown great perseverance and problem-solving skills, and we are so proud of their progress.

In History, we wrapped up our fascinating topic on the Stone Age to Iron Age by comparing different periods and reflecting on how life changed over time. The class had some brilliant discussions, showing how much they’ve learned.

This week, we were also lucky to have an exciting visit from an author and illustrator! The children loved engaging in creative activities inspired by their work, and many took the chance to get a signed book—a wonderful way to celebrate reading and storytelling.

February 2025

Even though it is the shortest month, February has still been busy in Year 5!
We have been learning about forces in Science; this has included air resistance. We have designed and tested parachutes which aimed to increase the amount of air resistance that could act on an object, therefore slowing its descent. 
In continuation of our Romans history topic, we have designed and begun to make Roman style clay pots. These had to be shaped like those used by the Romans, meet specific dimensions and use repeated patterns within the design. We also has a visit from the Education Library Service who brought in some Roman artefacts for us to look at and experience. 
We have also been lucky enough this month to have a first aid trainer visit from Callington Rotary Club and teach us all how to administer emergency aid. This included: how to get help, check for danger, move someone into the recovery position, dress small wounds and to help someone who is choking.

February 2025

This month in Year 4 we have finished off all of our Spring Term One units of learning. In English we completed a non-fiction unit on Tutankhamun where we wrote newspaper articles from when Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. We started by recapping the features of a newspaper and looking at some examples before recapping what we knew about the tombs discovery. 

In History, we completed work to answer our topic question; "Who was Tutankhamun and how did his life compare to mine as a nine year old?" the children found this fascinating and enjoyed comparing their life to that of Tutankhamun when he was the same age as them. They discovered just how different his life was and how he had so many more responsibilities than them. They also looked at all of the factors that contributed to these differences. 

In Science, we completed our unit on animals including humans by carrying out an experiment which involved us leaving six eggs in different liquids to test how different liquids can effect the enamel on our teeth. We recapped how to conduct a fair test and carried out lots of discussions around our experiment. 

In PE, the children finished their Gymnastics unit by showing contrasting shapes, actions and travelling movements within their sequences and showing different levels in their sequences.

We've been learning about what homes were like in the past. We talked about our kitchens now and the appliances we have in them. We discussed the fact that many of these need electricity in order to work. We then watched a short video about kitchens in the past. We talked about things that were different to our kitchens now. We learnt about how people washed their clothes using a dolly peg, washboard and mangle. We then moved on to talking about bathrooms. We watched another short video about bath time in the past and talked about the fact that most houses didn’t have a bathroom. We then sorted objects into two different sets according to whether they are found in our homes now or were found in them in the past.

We've also been learning about Chinese New Year. We listened to a story about how the years came to be named after 12 different animals. We watched a short video about how families celebrate Chinese New Year. We found out that this year is the year of the snake so we made snake masks and puppets.

In RE we talked about places that are special to us and why they are special. We talked about the fact that churches are special places for Christians. We looked at some photographs of churches and some of the objects found inside them. We also watched a short video showing some of the features of a church. We then visited our local church and drew some of the features.

In maths, we've been learning about doubles. We've been practising what we've learnt during continuous provision. We've sorted dominoes according to whether they're doubles or not, made playdough spots for the ladybirds and drawn spots on butterflies to make doubles. During some of our lessons we learnt how to compare the weight of objects and how to use balances to identify which is the heaviest and which is the lightest. We then used the balances to weigh the fruit and vegetables when selling food on the market stall.

The children have been really enjoying the school role play area. They've been brilliant at taking on the role of the teacher. They've been using what they've learnt in handwriting, maths and phonics to teach and help each other.

After half term we focused on activities to develop the children's perseverance. I gave the children some challenges to have a go at. These included throwing a ball in the air and catching it with one hand, balancing a ball on a bat and walking across the hall, making a card house and bouncing a ball into a cup. They also had some that involved working together with a partner. These included walking along with a large ball pressed against their backs and keeping a hoop between them as they moved around. Most children found these activities very difficult but they kept on trying. We talked about how they were being determined like a dung beetle. We also talked about how they felt when they managed to achieve what they set out to do.

In November, all the children created artwork to enter the Get Creative for Climate Justice Parliamentary Exhibition. We have just heard that two of our very talented artists have had their work chosen for the exhibition. Their artwork will be shown in an exhibition at the Houses of Parliament. Very well done!

A wonderful day on the Moor

Flyku

As part of a national event to celebrate short-form poetry, our class took part in a Flyku competition.

The challenge was simple - to create an original and inspiring Haiku poem and then present it in the form of a paper aeroplane.

The winning entries will get the chance to take their winning Flyku onto a plane and to fly their paper planes at altitude!  What a great prize!!

We really enjoyed the creativity of writing the Haiku poems - and we followed the instructions carefully to create our paper aeroplanes.  Most of all - we loved testing them when we were finished!

Hello Everyone!

We have enjoyed a great final week of learning based around our enquiry question; ‘Why aren’t Space Ships made of jelly?’

In science, we have enjoyed investigating and sorting magnetic and non-magnetic materials. 

We have been developing our speaking and listening skills in our space rocket role play area, after listening to conversations held by astronauts and technicians at NASA. Using our weekly ‘I see, I think, I wonder’ activity, we have also discussed the surface of the moon.

In maths this week, reception have been comparing weight and mass, while Year 1 have been busy refining their place value skills,  by representing numbers in different ways. 

Our art topic finished with some amazing outside sculptures using different natural materials. We used the knowledge, ideas and techniques of Andy Goldsworthy that we have built up throughout this half term. The results were both amazing and unique. The children thoroughly enjoyed their time in the school garden, collaborating with each other to collect, sort and present the natural materials that they found. Well done everybody. It was lovely to see such brilliant collaboration and creativity.

Celebrating Love…
Valentine’s Day in the nursery is the perfect opportunity for our young children to learn the values of kindness, affection, and friendship. While the day focuses on love, it is not just about heart-shaped cards and gifts; it’s about creating an environment where every child can learn the joy of caring for others.
Love and emotional connection are foundational to a child’s early development. Children in nursery are at a critical stage where their social and emotional learning begins to blossom. Valentine’s Day provides an excellent opportunity for us to introduce themes of empathy, sharing, and kindness. Through simple gestures and activities, children can begin to understand that love extends to their friends, family, and even the world around them.
Creating an environment that nurtures love does not have to involve grand gestures. In fact, small and simple activities can leave a big impact on the hearts of young children.
One of the most popular activities during Valentine’s in nurseries is making homemade cards. We created a simple heart-shaped cutout that the children enjoyed personalising them. These creations were made as gifts for their parents,or fellow classmates, teaching them the joy of giving.

Story-time with Love: Reading stories that focus on kindness, friendship, and love is an excellent way to introduce these themes in a meaningful way. Picture books like Guess how much I love you, captures the essence of love in simple, relatable terms our children can understand. Story-time offers a chance to discuss the emotional aspects of a story and reinforce positive behaviour’s.

Today we baked heart-shaped biscuits for Valentine’s Day, a perfect way to focus on emotions, empathy, and sharing. When the children helped  prepare the biscuits, they were  also learning to express care for others and be able to experience the joy of giving. After all, what better way to celebrate love than by sharing a sweet, homemade treat?

Valentine’s Day in the nursery is more than just a day for exchanging cards and candies. It’s an opportunity to sow the seeds of kindness, empathy, and love in the hearts of our  youngest children. Through simple activities, heartfelt gestures, and nurturing relationships, we can help our children understand that love isn’t just about the people closest to us; it’s about showing care and appreciation for everyone. The lessons learned on this special day will stick with them, creating a foundation for future friendships, compassion, and emotional intelligence.

This Valentine’s Day let’s remember that love comes in many forms, and teaching our little ones to give and receive love is one of the most beautiful gifts we can offer them.

Special Events in Year 2 
Spring 1


Religious Education:
This week we had a visit from our local vicar Ben Morgan Lundie to talk to the children about our Religious Education topic which has been all about the good news that Jesus brings. We were able to share what we had already been learning about and we asked lots of questions. The children could recall the story of Matthew and were able to remember why he was chosen by Jesus to be one of the disciples. Ben then told us another story about some of the other disciples. After half term we will be finding out all about the Easter story and how this is celebrated in Church.

Farm and Country Visit:
The children all enjoyed our visit all about where our foods come from. This linked to our science topic this term which has covered food chains. So many of the foods we eat come from local farms but we were also surprised to learn that many foods are grown and then transported across the world.
