Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy   Week ending 13.09.24

A wonderful week...

This week the children have been learning the story of Paddington Bear.  They have been using him to inspire their sentence writing including adding adjectives and using conjunctions.

In Geography, they located London on a map (as Padding is set in London) and they identified the four countries that make up the United Kingdom.

During Science this week the children compared different materials - after discussing what materials are.  They looked at fabrics, wood, metal, plastic, paper and glass.  They sorted the items they were given then looked around the classroom to see if they could spot any other examples of materials.

In R.E. they looked at the Jewish celebration of Shabbat (the seventh day of the week) and how it is celebrated.

On Friday the whole school voted for House Captains - ask your child who they voted for.

Welcome back!

A very warm welcome to the new school year! I hope that you all had an opportunity to enjoy some time to relax (even if the weather wasn’t particularly good). The children have all settled back into school fantastically and have been getting to grips with their new learning. It has also been lovely to see the new Reception children in school and their smiling faces around school have been contagious!

Both Mrs Lake and I have been very impressed by the learning and kindness that we have seen throughout the school and the smiles that we see daily are a lovely reminder of why Darite is so special.

It has been a busy week again with the children looking very smart for their photos this morning. Wild tribe afternoons are proving very popular and from next week, they will need their kits.

I’m sure you will have admired our scarecrow for the village competition – although there are lots around - we think ours is the best! Being part of the Darite community is a very special thing and seeing the village come together for this event is great.

A reminder that there are lots of exciting activities planned for this half term. Please make sure that you check the calendar for any changes and updates and that we have correct and up to date email addresses to make sure that you don’t miss out on information. Clubs start next week as we continue to get into the new year.

Dark is...Exciting!

Our first full week in Landaviddy class is over! In English, we have continued reading our story The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark' and used role play to explore what the characters might be thinking, saying and feeling. In Maths, Year 2 have been partitioning two digit numbers into tens and ones, with Year 3 recognising and exploring hundreds.

During our Wider Curriculum lessons this week, we have been busy in Art, sketching and using our observational skills to draw like an artist. In Geography, we learnt the names of the continents and oceans by learning a song. In Science, we looked closely at what offspring are and how they change into adults. Who knew a baby goat is called a Kid!? In PE, we have been practising our Yoga, and we are already showing how flexible we are! This afternoon, we enjoyed learning about possession and what this means when you are an attacker or defender during team games. The sun shone too, which we were grateful for after a wet week!

Homework
Please find attached the Homework grid for this half term, along with the KIRFS for Autumn 1 for you to practise at home. In addition to this, please continue to read daily and practise your Common Exception Word spellings (attached below). I have also uploaded some spelling challenge cards which may help you when practising these. Children can also access TT Rockstars to practise their times table facts. Anything you can do at home can make a big difference to your learning!

Reading Books
Everyone was sent home on Thursday with their new reading record and colour banded book. We ask that children read their book twice at home before getting it changed, however longer reads can be changed after being read once. Additionally, Year 2 will be sent home next week with their minibooks, relating to the sound we are learning in Phonics. In future, a new minibook will be sent home every Friday.

PE
Our PE days are Tuesday and Friday, so please make sure PE and swimming kits are complete in school everyday.

Congratulations to Frankie and Nevaeh for being Landaviddy's People of the Week!

We hope you have a fabulous weekend and look forward to seeing you all on Monday!

What a busy week for Team Brunel!

This week, we’ve been so impressed with how hard the children have been working on using their 'Issy Manners' throughout the school day. From polite greetings to helping each other in class, it’s wonderful to see them putting these important values into practice. Our challenge for the children this week is to use their 'Issy Manners' at home as well! Please encourage them to continue their good habits and let us know how they’re getting on— we’d love to hear about the positive impact their manners are making at home too!

Last Saturday, we launched our very first Brunel Bedtime Stories. Our story this week was 'The Koala that Could' by Rachel Bright and Jim Field. Here is a link to the video again for anyone who missed it. https://fb.watch/uv0RqfVsyD/ We are excited to find out what the story will be this Saturday. Join our Facebook page at 7pm on Saturday to find out.

On Thursday evening, we hosted our first Maths Games Evening of the academic year. It was fantastic to see so many of our families at this event which has become a popular part of our school calendar. Our next Maths Games Evening takes place on Thursday 14th November. We hope you will be able to join us.

Welcome Back

Welcome back to a new school year.

Eagle Class is made up of year 5 and 6, plus the year 4 pupils join us for our afternoon lessons.

We are taught by Mrs Mclaughlin on Mondays and Tuesdays and Miss Howell on Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays with Mrs Price and Mrs Williams.

PE day is Thursday, please wear your kit to school.

Reading diaries are checked during library time and we will be looking to see if children are reading regularly at home.

Children still have logins to Spelling shed and Times Table Rockstars to use at home to rehearse key skills as often as they can.

We are starting the year by learning about Europe in geography and electricity in science. We have attached a curriculum map for this term to show what we will be covering up to Christmas.

Welcome to Year 3.

A warm welcome to you to Copper Valley Junior Academy! We in Year 3 hope that you have had a restful break...though a bit more sunshine would have been welcome. I shall continue to be the full-time teacher in Year 3 (no longer Lusty Glaze just Year 3) with Ms Vine and Miss Hindle as support staff. Mrs Cox will cover my PPA on a Thursday afternoon. We are still using SeeSaw to document much of our wider curriculum and you can contact me on there with any updates, news or concerns. Please be aware that out-of-office hours apply to that and messages sent after 5pm will likely not be picked up until 8am the next day. 7

Our first step in learning is investigating the question ‘How did we live before metal?’ An exploration into the Stone Age and life for those early humans. After half term we are looking to find out ‘Where do rocks and volcanoes come from?’

Any questions or concerns I’m about most days at the end of the day for a chat. Best wishes Miss Owen

PE

PE will be on a Friday so please can children come in their kit that day. More details on what the PE kit should look like is on the school website. Please can you make sure trainers are suitable (no studs).

Labels on clothing

All of the children have their own peg outside in the corridor and in the classroom, there is a jumper box. Please can clothing be named as it makes returning it far easier.

Reading

Like Year 2, children on the RWI scheme will have their book for 3 reads. Once off this we assess their reading levels and children are assigned an Accelerated Reader level that will help them choose a book from the library within their reading range. Book swap day will be Friday so make sure books are in then.

Snack

In Key Stage 2 children no longer receive a free snack and so this needs to be provided. No sweets or chocolate please. I do realise that some children go for the ‘desert’ element of their packed lunch for snack and we do encourage them to choose one of the other things there.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text

Although there is no strict homework arrangements, it is recommended that children in Year 3 read 3-5 times a week, practice their times tables and practice their spellings.
Spelling lists will be given out weekly and although we do not have tests a read through the words is always helpful. They can also be practiced using LetterJoin on a device. I usually set tasks on Mathletics and Reading Eggs each week which is related to the class work and in KS2 children are given logins for Times Table Rockstars.
Logins will be put in reading diaries for your reference.

Art

The new uniform looks especially smart...however we will be doing art once a week. An old t-shirt would be very helpful to stop any messes getting on those lovely white t-shirts! Just sent in a named bag for pegs please. Also if you have any old t-shirts you’d like to donate for painting shirts we’d be very grateful.

Pick up

Please can you let us know if your child is going to be going to Kids Club, if there is a particular person who is going to be picking them up or if you have a longstanding arrangement with another parent for collection (please can this last one be in writing so there is no confusion). It just makes the end of the day easier while we get to know everyone’s faces.

Jewellry

A polite reminder that children shouldn’t be wearing jewellery in school. Watches and small earring studs are allowed but no hoops or drop earrings as these can get caught and pulled.

Absences

There has been lots on the news this summer about school absence. Just a reminder that the school doors open at 08:45am and close at 08:55am. Children who are late often miss key elements in their learning e.g. spelling practice, times table practice, the timetable of the day so being on time is important for children to feel included in all elements of their learning. If your child is unwell please can you call the school office before 08:30am and leave a message so the appropriate absence can be added to the register.

Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy   Magnificent Marazion!

by Joanne Pentreath

We are so proud of how Marazion class have settled in these last two weeks. They have really shown us how incredible they are with their 'Issy Manners' throughout the day and they have enjoyed starting our learning for the year.

In English, we have started our unit on descriptive settings, where we have retold the text, found some features and worked a lot with vocabulary.

In maths, our Place Value unit has started in year 3 and year 4. The children are working hard in number and knowing their values.

Our topic of 'How active is our planet?' has sparked interest and many many questions which we look forward to finding out this term! We learnt, this week, about the different layers of the Earth. In art, we began to look at the artist Jackson Pollock who will inspire our EXPLOSIVE volcano paintings later this term. We talked a lot about changes; how they makes us feel and about different thoughts we may have in PSHE. We worked on how to help ourselves when these thoughts and feelings are troubling us.

We have also enjoyed our first reading assembly this week where Miss Pentreath read the inspirational true story 'Emmanuel's Dream'-can your child tell you what it was about?

Don't forget to log reading so that we can give out more awards and prizes to the children please!

The children presented their vocabulary findings with the rest of the class with their groups. They discovered lots of impressive 'wow words' to use in their own writing!

Take a look at our KIRF's (Key Instant Recall Facts) for Maths

This term, we are introducing some new language. Key Instant Recall Facts look at the fundamental skills needed for maths and include number bonds and times tables. They are being introduced to the children and Mrs Davies (our math's lead) will be emailing this week to give you all a little bit more detail on how you can help at home. Please see below for the Year 4 and Year 5 KIRF's.

Welcome Back

Well done to all of our lovely learners in Year 2 for a fabulous first week back!

We have been very busy learning the story of Little Red Riding Hood, by acting out the story and making our own story maps. Can you have a go at retelling the story at home?

In maths, we have started to learn about place value. We are looking at two-digit numbers and have been making these numbers with practical resources, by counting the tens and counting the ones.

We have learned about colour in art this week. We have been experimenting with mixing two primary colours together to make a secondary colour. We then used black and white to make our colours lighter or darker. Can you remember all of the primary and secondary colours?

Some updates:

Our P.E. days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays this term.

Books will be changed and sent home on a Friday.

Keep up the great work, Year 2!

We all belong and we all have a role

In our PSHE lesson this week, we have been considering all of the different roles that make up our school.  Everyone has a part to play and we had good fun acting out the different job descriptions of all the roles we see in our school. We wrote job descriptions for music teachers, teaching assistants, meal time assistants and even the head teacher. After last week's lesson, we now realise that our attitudes and actions really do make a difference to how our class works. We all have a part to play and we can all contribute to making our school a meaningful and fun place to be.

In PE, we experienced our first hockey lesson. EVERYONE managed to master the basic skills involved with holding the stick and dribbling the ball. The children had fun working together to improve.

Dear all!

We have had a wonderful week!  We launched our first history lesson yesterday which included looking at school buildings from the past and present and we ordered them into a time line.  We were shocked to learn that the Victorian School Buildings are still standing and being used today!  We then looked at the inside of the classrooms and decided that they look very different to now.  The uniforms of the children are different too!

The children are also beginning their French Unit this week - the first lesson is greetings!  So please practise this with your child at home if you know any French!

In dance, we are learning how to dance with a partner.  Our first theme was "picking apples for Autumn" and we thoroughly enjoyed learning the moves.  We will be moving on to some very simple Ballroom dance steps to link in with our Victorian unit this term.

In Science, the children are learning all about Animals Including Humans.  For Year 3, they are learning about the different food groups - it would be lovely to discuss which food groups they have on their dinner in the evenings!!  For Year 2, they are learning about what animals need to survive - if you have any pets at home, it would be lovely to maybe send some pictures in of your child looking after their pets!

What a wonderful week.

It has been a real pleasure getting to know your children more fully over the last week and I have named them my 'little Spitzbubs'. Through our class story - Fritz and Kurt - we have learnt that Spitzbub means rascal.
During maths it has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm for learning that they all have. They have a wonderful 'can do' attitude and are not afraid to share their scores, admit they don't know or to ask for help. We are focusing on our times tables so please encourage them to use TTR for at least 20 minutes a day.
During English we are needing to focus on our handwriting but they have wonderful ideas and are excited to write their diary entries including the skills we have been working on.

Our afternoons have been focusing on our PSHE - being me in my world. The children are incredibly empathetic and aware of how good citizens behave in the country and within our school environment.
A reminder that PE is on a Wednesday and Friday. Please can I ask all parents to ensure they have done their consents on their arbor so that next week I am able to share some pictures of our learning. Many thanks, Sam

Welcome to Year 4|5
What will we be learning in the wider curriculum this term?

For the first time this year, we are able to share with you the curriculum map that we use to plan the wider curriculum content and learning for each half term. The wider curriculum includes all of the subjects except English and maths. We use the National Curriculum for our teaching decisions and this is based on the knowledge that we want children to gain. There is a question that guides the work and we make sure that they get a good share of all of the subjects across the year, so some boxes may have less in them for one term than other subjects. We hope that you find these maps helpful and when we start a new one, we will send it to you. It would be great if you could talk with your child about what they are learning from time to time now that you know.

Welcome back!

We have had a wonderful first week in Foundation / Year 1 this week! Are big question this term is ‘who am I?’ and we have been exploring this in lots of different ways. In science we have been thinking about the human body. We were really impressed when we found out that there is over 200 bones in the human body! We have also been thinking about our question through art; using pencils, crayons paint and other ways to make pictures of ourselves.

We have also been exploring our new outdoor area! We have been putting our construction hats on to build houses, and we have been searching for minibeasts, leaves and clouds in our Geography, to learn more about the world around us.

Some updates:

PE days are Wednesday and Thursday.

Books will be changed on a Friday.

Please bring wellies that are named into school if you can.

Please remember to book lunches via ParentPay.

I think we are in for a great year!

The Year 1 team

If you have any questions about the curriculum map, please let me know and I will help as much as possible.

Reading for Pleasure at Brunel.

At Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy, we are passionate about nurturing a love for reading in our children. We believe that reading is not just an essential academic skill but a powerful gateway to unlocking a child's full potential. Reading for pleasure can transform children’s lives, impacting their confidence, creativity, and ultimately their life chances. That's why we have been working hard to ensure that every child at our school has the opportunity to develop a genuine love for reading.

At Brunel, we’ve been transforming our school environment to reflect our commitment to reading. We’ve worked hard to develop inviting and engaging reading spaces across the school that encourage children to pick up a book, explore new worlds, and enjoy stories. We want to create lifelong readers who are curious, thoughtful, and imaginative. By working together—both in school and at home—we can give our children the best possible start, equipping them with the skills and confidence they need for the future. Let's continue to foster that love for reading and watch our children thrive.

Emazdad - Road Safety Workshop
Wednesday 25th September

Today we have had a wonderful road safety talk from Emazdad. We learnt about keeping safe on the road and the assembly was amazing. The children were able to recall so many of the rules for keeping safe. See if they can recall some of those rules when they are at home.

STOP ... LOOK and LISTEN.
