Welcome Back!

Welcome back, Year 4s!

It has been a fantastic two weeks and everyone has settled back into school with enthusiasm.

History:
The children are enjoying our history topic - 'Anglo-Saxons and Vikings' and have already learnt the names of the tribes; where they came from and why they wanted to leave their homelands to settle in Britain.  We are sure that they will love sharing their new knowledge about the Anglo-Saxon era with you.  Why not ask them to teach you what they know!

Maths:
Over the next few weeks, Year 4 will be working with place value.  They have revised what they know about numbers to 100 and 1000 and are now working with numbers to 10,000.  The children have used a range of place value resources and images to help them understand the value of digits within numbers.  They now know how to represent numbers using pictures, they can partition numbers in different ways and can find missing numbers on  number lines.  Each lesson includes challenging problem solving questions to provide children with opportunities to use their learning to explain their reasoning behind their answers.

English:
Poetry has been our focus over the past two weeks.  We have looked at different forms of poetry including Japanese haiku, sonnets and free verse.  We decided that it would be fun to flip the 'What did you do in the Summer holiday' task on its head and write some poems about what we didn't do in the summer holiday!  The children let their imaginations run wild and generated lots of ideas about visiting strange planets and under water scenes.  Everyone has enjoyed creating their poems and will present them using their best handwriting.

PE:
We have been blessed with lovely weather for our PE sessions over the past two weeks and the children have enjoyed working with DT Sports up on the field.  The children have been learning how to find space and how to send and receive a ball.   We have also been learning why it's a good idea to keep our bodies fit and healthy.  We have learnt some great exercises and fun activities to make our hearts and bodies strong.

Best wishes,
The Year 4 Team
